Past Day Walks - Spring 2006

General
A series of walk near London, reached by train. Hence, no need to pre-book, just turn up at the time specified below.
You need to bring waterproofs in case it rains, packed lunch and some water to drink. Some places may be muddy so walking boots or old trainers are appropriate footwear. Smart shoes, flip-flops or denim jeans are not suitable.

We meet outside the ticket office at the station specified and also can be found sitting in the front carriage of the train. Ticket prices are from central London with a young persons' railcard. If you don't have one, add 50 %. If we can get a groupsave ticket prices will be slightly less. Also, if you have a London Underground season ticket or day travelcard, you can buy a ticket from its boundary saving more money.

Sunday 29 January. The W.A.M./J.C.W.T.M. memorial walk
This walk is in memorial of 'The Great Man' himself. Starting at Audley End train station the walk will take in some of the surrounding countryside before heading to the world famous Saffron-Walden Maze. Opened by 'The Great Man' himself in 1753 (a great achievement, probably only eclipsed by his birth three years later.) it has been said that as the maze actually inhabits fractal space it is actually infinite, and although some do believe this claim to be a total lie I believe we will prove this correct. There will be a pub visit during the walk (though getting totally sloshed, spending all of your money and dieing through mercury poisoning is but an optional tribute to 'The Great Man'.)

Saturday 25 February. Thames Barrier and Greenwich
The walk will start at Falconwood Station in south-east london, walking north through Eltham park and Oxleas wood to Woolwich common, then on to look at the mighty Thames Barrier, there will be plenty of time for pointing and taking photos. From here we will walk along the Thames path, looking out over the sludgy brown river that gives the path its name. Continuing along the path, we should reach Greenwich park fairly quicky, and then we will walk round the park, via the observatory and the national maritime museum for those who wish to see them (both free!) or via a pub for those who don't (sadly, no free beverages). The walk will finish with a lengthy tour of the many beautiful pubs of Greenwich, and a special celebrity appearance from C.J.B.!! Approx 8 miles.

This is a MODERATE walk, for lazy people, and should not tax anybody unless they are grossly unfit. Although we plan to have multiple pub stops, there is no guarantee of lunch at any of them, so bring your own lunch.

Saturday 18 March. Monopoly Pub Crawl
Not sure whether this should be counted as a walk, but then they are all a long way apart so you end up walking quite a way.

For those who don't know, the idea is to go to a pub on the street of every property square on the London Monopoly board and have a drink (1/2 pint beer, single spirit, small glass of wine or soft drink!). We tried this last year - see photos

Meet: 10:30 at Elephant & Castle tube station so we can get to the pub on Old Kent Road for 11
You will need a Zone 1-2 travelcard.

We shall walk across Richmond Park via Ham Bottom and Spankers Hill Wood and then join the Beverley Brook Walk, which passes the Barnes Wetland Centre. We will end up in Hammersmith where we can either find a pub or catch the tube home. Approximately 10 miles.

Travel details:
Meet: 11:00 at the Kew Road exit of Richmond tube station. (Make your own way there)

Saturday 01 April (N.B. New date). Dover-Walmer : The south west ridge of Kent, or coastal fortifications through the ages
Starting from Dover Priory station we will walk west along the top of the south downs before heading south to the sea near Shakespeare cliff and back east to Dover passing under the drop redoubt (Napoleonic fort) and up the cliff passing under the walls of Dover Castle (medieval castle and latter fortifications), above Dover harbour and head northeast along the top of the famous greyish cliffs of Dover no doubt sighting blackbirds but hopefully keeping the dark clouds at bay. We will follow the descending line of cliffs until there is another beach and railway station at Walmer where we will find Walmer Castle, a Saxon shore fort (Roman C4th /5thAD), a pub and the train home. Aprox 16-20km (10-12 miles)

(Post walk note: This walk ended up as 19 miles, thus rather more than the plan. What do you expect for a walk starting before noon on the 1st of April? Walk was, however, completed and enjoyed by all.)
