Piss in Boots
Pembroke & Cornwall, 22-25th August 2008.
The trip started well on Thursday, when Major Tom warned us that South
Wales (ie. Pembroke) was under water. A few phonecalls and a social
later and we were on the way back to Trewellard Campsite, Cornwall,
twinned in May with a Sarajevo refugee camp. Stopping only for
gourmet chips & kebab on the pavement of a small village outside
Bristol, we arrived at the usual spot, pitched our new homes and
annoyed the locals, until beds were made and slept in.
The morning started with a rude awakening, but only improved from
then, as we packed our bags and headed for Sennen. Having agreed with
the walkers to meet in the pub, they were free to walk the Cornish
landscape, taking in the Carn Brae 'mountain'. While the rest watched
the waves breaking on the coast and did some climbing occasionally
too. The old Success having played host to us and the olympics for a
while, we depated for the barbeque spot to escape the space/time
continuum, as well as the heavy drizzle. A hasty burger or two later
and back to a pub we went, where four presidents gathered and
discussed stealing a dog. Promising to return the following evening
for live music, we left to bed.
It was definitely 8.30 weather in the morning but it rained just long
enough for us to arrive at Bosigarn Castle in brilliant sunshine and
blistering heat. It seems the walkers had the harder day today,
walking along the coast to St. Ives, while the climbers took extreme
precautions, calling a helicopter for a diff. Although the danger of
being thumped by an army instructor was significantly greater. A few
hot showers later, and yesterday's potatoes cunningly disguised in the
salad, tea was eaten and beer drunk. The evening was a decidedly
loud, alcoholic and violent (must have been the stella glasses) .
After a record breakingly late night for two presidents, there was no
crying sunshine, but a morning in a tea shop for some and a trip to
the seaside for others. Packing up was done was done swiftly in the
sun, and we were able to leave with no further incident (apart from
the traffic kind).
