As in Apollo flaying the satyr
Dunmail Rise, Lake District, 1-3rd August 2008.
The weekend started well, we had a good run up to the Lakes, with a
late night tour of Grasmere thrown in. Having selected a room each,
we settled in the lounge to discuss plans for the following day's
climbing and walking.
Saturday morning and breakfast was eaten, plans were made, and we
prepared for a showery day on the hills (all except our hobitsheep
friend we left curled by the fire). But the fates their own plans in
store for Dave and Toby who, as they set off on their climbing
escapade realised their fatal error of forgetting the rope! The
climbing plan quickly abandoned, all 7 of us set out on a walk up to
Crinkle Crags, Bow Fell and Esk Pike. We enjoyed* occasional spots of
rain and poor visibility, which gave way at opportune moments to
stunning views of the area.
A quick beer run in Ambleside later, and we had the lovely
entertainment of Dave teaching Mike to flay a chicken followed by
discussions of sibling torture over a delicious Coq au Vin thanks to
Dave (and others') hard work.
Sunday dawned bright and wet, but Toby and Dave were determined to get
some climbing done, while Mike was eager to try a Ghyll scramble, so
off we trotted to our respective jaunts and enjoyed getting another
day's scrambling/climbing done. With the weekend drawing to a close,
we wrapped it up quickly, with speedy sweeping and washing up done, we
left the hut in time to arrive in London at 10 and part ways.
